DESCRIPTION:A new solo show by Cardiff based artist and writer Anthony Shapland\, guest-curated by Marie-Anne McQuay. The exhibition includes a new film and will be accompanied by an integrated reading space and events programme reflecting Shapland’s interest in the intersection between art and writing. \nTŷ Pawb is delighted to announce a large-scale solo exhibition by Cardiff based artist and writer Anthony Shapland\, opening Summer 2026. Anthony Shapland is a Welsh artist\, founder of artist-led space g39 and novelist. Within his writing and artistic practice\, he blends documentary and fiction\, drawing on his lived experience of rural queerness and growing up performing straight. \nExhibition runs: 11 July – 31 October 2026\nPreview and Press View: 10 July 2026 \nShapland was recently selected as one of The Observer’s 10 best new novelists 2025 and Waterstone’s Welsh book of the year for his debut novel A Room Above a Shop (Granta)\, which tells the story of hidden intimacy between two men living in a South Wales valley in the late 1980s\, during the time of Section 28. Continuing to work between the gallery and the printed page\, whether in image\, text or film\, Shapland constructs intimate portraits of lives lived at the edges of rural landscapes\, often filmed on location around Bargoed\, the town in the Rhymney Valley where he grew up. His ongoing fascination with illusion and mimicry\, reflecting the ways in which his protagonists seek to blend in with their surroundings\, manifests in his use of the hidden techniques of traditional filmmaking\, including props\, backdrops\, filters\, artificial light and Foley sound effects. These cinematic devices in turn set up and then unpack coded narratives. Speaking also to other concealed lives\, the artist asks\, “What happens when you stay?” \nShapland’s exhibition at Tŷ Pawb will include a new film and builds on recent moving image work\, including Starling Seven (2025)\, in which a montage of starlings copy and repeat man-made noises\, and Between the Dog and the Wolf (2019) which encapsulates the artist’s interest in the cinematic illusion of shooting day for night. The exhibition will be accompanied by an integrated reading space and a dynamic public programme. \nShapland’s solo show will be guest-curated by long time peer and associate Marie-Anne McQuay\, previously curator of Liverpool Biennial 2025\, with Tŷ Pawb Creative Director Jo Marsh. \nAnthony Shapland said: “I’m excited to be working at Tŷ Pawb – exploring the space between exhibition and publication\, image and word and referring to a life lived in two parts\, performed – never what it seemed on the surface. Nothing is what it appears to be\, and an early desire to not stand-out\, even after coming-out\, has had a lasting impact on all of my work – filled with references to stage and backstage\, to a performance of life. SUMMARY:Exhibition: Freely Chosen - Recent moments captured by Wrexham Playworkers
DESCRIPTION:For Ffoto Cymru 2026 with the theme of There’s More To Life\, an exhibition in Wrexham could only centre around one thing – playwork and adventure playgrounds. \nWales was the first country in the world to legislate in support of children’s right to play –through Play Sufficiency Duty. This means that play is already special in Wales\, and in this specialness is amplified in Wrexham\, which is home to the only three adventure playgrounds in Wales: The Venture\, Gwenfro Valley and the Land. \nThese playgrounds work in dialogue with one another\, and with the local play and youth support team\, to provide life changing opportunities for children to be themselves through play\, free from the constraints that govern most situations and settings in their daily lives. \nThe people perhaps best placed in the world to capture moments of children’s play through photography\, are playworkers themselves. They are immersed in the moment with the children; they are attuned to the rhythms of play as it ebbs and flows; they have longstanding relationships with the children and have earned their trust. For this reason\, all the images in this exhibition have been captured by Wrexham playworkers\, rather than by a visiting artist or photographer.

DESCRIPTION:Transform damaged or tired jumpers\, coats\, and blankets\, making mittens or a snood to help keep you warm! \nOld clothing can be used to create new things. \nAt this workshop we’ll take jumpers that have shrunk in the wash or tired and damaged or old coats and blankets and turn them into mittens or snoods using hand-stitching. \nAll materials will be provided\, though if you have any old\, felted jumpers\, or boiled wool style coats\, feel free to bring them along. SUMMARY:Matinee: Free Lunchtime Concert - Dominic Downs (Piano)
DESCRIPTION:Dominic Downs graduated from Royal Northern College of Music in 2026\, with a first-class honours degree in piano performance. At RNCM he was taught by Dr Murray McLachlan\, with additional coaching from Professor Danny Driver (Royal College of Music).  \nHe previously trained at Chetham’s School of Music\, studying piano with Jonathan Middleton\, jazz piano with Les Chisnell\, and composition and conducting with Dr Jeremy Pike. He has also received artistic guidance from many leading pianists including Martin Roscoe\, Peter Donohoe\, Penelope Roskell and Joanna MacGregor. He is continuing advanced study with Martin Roscoe\, while also studying choral conducting with Stuart Overington. \nHe was awarded a composition scholarship to the Royal College of Music in 2023 before beginning his performance studies at RNCM. \nA prize-winning pianist\, conductor and composer\, Dominic has been performing across the UK since 2023\, and has already attracted national attention; he featured on BBC One in October 2023\, where he was described as “an exceptional talent with a bright future ahead of him.” Recent critical acclaim from the Brighton Fringe Review highlights “a very fine communicator…a true showman as well as a virtuoso\,” praising his “tenebrous\, powerfully voiced” Bach\, the “obsessive” drama of his Beethoven Tempest\, and his “lyrical Modernism” in Kabalevsky’s miniatures while the Southport News praised his November 2024 recital as “the performance of a true virtuoso.” \nDominic gave 28 solo performances across the UK in the 2025/26 season\, alongside chamber projects and diverse engagements such as live accompaniment for silent films and jazz ensemble performance. He was selected to appear in a sell-out concert with Steven Osborne (June 2025)\, and his recital calendar is almost fully booked for 2026/27 season. \nAlongside performing\, Dominic maintains a thriving teaching practice\, including a 100% record in getting his advanced students places in prestigious music schools and conservatoires\, and leads masterclasses and workshops. As Music Director of the Lancaster Millennium Choir\, he guided them to victory in the prestigious Lancashire Choir of the Year competition in his first season. DESCRIPTION:An evening of live music with two top Welsh language acts. \nGwilym Bowen Rhys \nGwilym Bowen Rhys has established himself as an ambassador for Welsh language song both at home in Wales and across the world\, confirmed by his nomination for the Folk Singer of the Year Award in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. Gwilym has been singing in his native Welsh language since he can remember\, giving him a deep connection with the traditional songs and music of his native land. \nPerforming as a trio with Patrick Rimes on fiddle (Calan\, VRi\, ALAW) and Gwen Mairi on harp\, Gwilym’s songs are presented in an intimate\, carefully balanced setting. The arrangements are restrained and attentive\, but also powerful and energetic\, drawing from the rich Welsh folk tradition whilst remaining contemporary. \nElin a Carys \nElin and Carys are sisters and their close\, ethereal harmonies and arrangements of folk songs and original songs draw on their musical upbringing and the landscapes of Mid Wales.
