DESCRIPTION:A new solo show by Cardiff based artist and writer Anthony Shapland\, guest-curated by Marie-Anne McQuay. The exhibition includes a new film and will be accompanied by an integrated reading space and events programme reflecting Shapland’s interest in the intersection between art and writing. \nTŷ Pawb is delighted to announce a large-scale solo exhibition by Cardiff based artist and writer Anthony Shapland\, opening Summer 2026. Anthony Shapland is a Welsh artist\, founder of artist-led space g39 and novelist. Within his writing and artistic practice\, he blends documentary and fiction\, drawing on his lived experience of rural queerness and growing up performing straight. \nExhibition runs: 11 July – 31 October 2026\nPreview and Press View: 10 July 2026 \nShapland was recently selected as one of The Observer’s 10 best new novelists 2025 and Waterstone’s Welsh book of the year for his debut novel A Room Above a Shop (Granta)\, which tells the story of hidden intimacy between two men living in a South Wales valley in the late 1980s\, during the time of Section 28. Continuing to work between the gallery and the printed page\, whether in image\, text or film\, Shapland constructs intimate portraits of lives lived at the edges of rural landscapes\, often filmed on location around Bargoed\, the town in the Rhymney Valley where he grew up. His ongoing fascination with illusion and mimicry\, reflecting the ways in which his protagonists seek to blend in with their surroundings\, manifests in his use of the hidden techniques of traditional filmmaking\, including props\, backdrops\, filters\, artificial light and Foley sound effects. These cinematic devices in turn set up and then unpack coded narratives. Speaking also to other concealed lives\, the artist asks\, “What happens when you stay?” \nShapland’s exhibition at Tŷ Pawb will include a new film and builds on recent moving image work\, including Starling Seven (2025)\, in which a montage of starlings copy and repeat man-made noises\, and Between the Dog and the Wolf (2019) which encapsulates the artist’s interest in the cinematic illusion of shooting day for night. The exhibition will be accompanied by an integrated reading space and a dynamic public programme. \nShapland’s solo show will be guest-curated by long time peer and associate Marie-Anne McQuay\, previously curator of Liverpool Biennial 2025\, with Tŷ Pawb Creative Director Jo Marsh. \nAnthony Shapland said: “I’m excited to be working at Tŷ Pawb – exploring the space between exhibition and publication\, image and word and referring to a life lived in two parts\, performed – never what it seemed on the surface. Nothing is what it appears to be\, and an early desire to not stand-out\, even after coming-out\, has had a lasting impact on all of my work – filled with references to stage and backstage\, to a performance of life. SUMMARY:Matinee - FREE Lunchtime Concerts: Rufus Edwards (Piano)
DESCRIPTION:Rufus Edwards is an award-winning pianist from North Wales\, and has just completed a degree in Music at Christ Church\, Oxford. Beginning piano lessons aged 5\, he now holds the DipABRSM and LRSM performance diplomas\, both with distinction.  \nA frequent competitor at a national level\, he was last year named Pendine Young Musician of Wales for a recital at St Asaph Cathedral\, broadcast on BBC Radio Cymru. \nHe has won first-place instrumental prizes in the Eisteddfod Genedlaethol in 2019\, 2021 and 2023. At the 2025 Eisteddfod\, held here in Wrecsam\, he also won the Eleri Evans Memorial Prize for accompaniment. \nAt Oxford\, in addition to many solo recitals\, Rufus was President of the Christ Church Music Society. Also a clarinettist\, he has previously played in the Oxford University Wind Orchestra\, joining them on the piano last year to perform Igor Stravinsky’s Petrouchka. SUMMARY:Matinee - Free Lunchtime Concert: Nova Saxophone Quartet
DESCRIPTION:The Nova Saxophone Quartet is an emerging\, vibrant quartet formed in Manchester in September 2023 from students and graduates of RNCM and the University of Manchester.  \nTheir debut performance was at the student-led festival AliveFest Reborn! where they leaped into the contemporary performance scene with dynamic and explosive works by Gordon Goodwin and Chris Evan Hass. \nThey have since performed at renowned venues in Manchester’s Classical music scene including the Anthony Burger Centre\, as well as Wakefield Cathedral and further afield. With a focus on contemporary repertoire\, the quartet tackles challenging works that explore the range of the saxophone’s dynamism and breathtaking emotion. They enjoy collaborating with student composers and have commissioned works including Rob Hughs’ Supernova\, which they premiered in 2023\, with a studio recording soon to be released! \nThe members of the quartet are also individually renowned in Manchester’s emerging professional scene\, as conductors\, musical directors\, soloists and competition winning composers.

DESCRIPTION:Leeds-based pianist and composer Simeon Walker has built a reputation as one of the UK’s most compelling voices in contemporary piano music\, with his work regularly broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM and streamed over 50 million times worldwide. \nA prolific live performer\, Walker tours extensively across the UK and Europe\, sharing stages with artists including Neil Cowley\, Submotion Orchestra\, Erland Cooper and LYR\, and appearing at Latitude Festival\, the Edinburgh Fringe\, Manchester Jazz Festival and SXSW London. His composition ‘Reverie’ featured on the first official Piano Day compilation (2022) alongside Nils Frahm\, Ólafur Arnalds and Chilly Gonzales. \nBeyond his own work\, Simeon is an accomplished composer\, performer\, arranger and session musician\, collaborating across musical genres and interdisciplinary art\, dance and theatre projects. He sits on the Musicians’ Union Live Advisory Board and the Featured Artists Coalition Artist Council\, and in 2018 he founded Brudenell Piano Sessions\, a live music series celebrating original piano-centred music\, which he continues to curate. \nDrawing on a classical foundation and a deep appreciation for jazz\, ambient and experimental forms\, Simeon’s performances move between hushed introspection and expansive grandeur. Every week we’ll reveal a treasure trove of art materials\, loose parts and recycling themed around our exhibitions to be transformed into whatever artworks\, models and fashion accessories you can dream up! \nFamily Art Club is suitable for children of all ages and we encourage parents\, grandparents and carers to get stuck in too – this isn’t children’s art club\, its Family Art Club! \n– Please wear clothes you won’t be upset about getting messy. \n– All children must be accompanied by an adult. \nBooking \nFamily Art Club is a drop-in session\, but we do recommend booking to make sure that you have a place during busier times. Places at Family Art Club are offered on a ‘pay what you can’ donation basis\, so that you can choose how much to pay according to what your family can afford. Your donations support us in delivering an accessible arts service for local families. \nSession Topics \n05/09/26 – Dusk and Dawn – exploring sunrise and sunset alongside the MURMUR exhibition.\n12/09/26 – International Dot Day – taking inspiration from Yayoi Kusama.\n19/09/26 – International Day of Peace – with guest artist Sophie Nina.\n26/09/26 – World Dream Day – creating surrealist dreamscapes.\n3/09/26 – National Badger Day – artwork inspired by the UK’s largest land predator.\n10/09/26 – 1867 Wrexham Year of Wonder: Dewey Decimal Character Design Competition – create your own unique character in collaboration with Wrexham Library.\n17/09/26 – World Food Day – potato printing and art inspired by what we eat. \nNo sessions on the 24th & 31st October for half term.\nFamily Art Club winter programme starts on the 7th November.
