Exhibition: Freely Chosen – Recent moments captured by Wrexham Playworkers

For Ffoto Cymru 2026 with the theme of There’s More To Life, an exhibition in Wrexham could only centre around one thing – playwork and adventure playgrounds.
Wales was the first country in the world to legislate in support of children’s right to play –through Play Sufficiency Duty. This means that play is already special in Wales, and in this specialness is amplified in Wrexham, which is home to the only three adventure playgrounds in Wales: The Venture, Gwenfro Valley and the Land.
These playgrounds work in dialogue with one another, and with the local play and youth support team, to provide life changing opportunities for children to be themselves through play, free from the constraints that govern most situations and settings in their daily lives.
The people perhaps best placed in the world to capture moments of children’s play through photography, are playworkers themselves. They are immersed in the moment with the children; they are attuned to the rhythms of play as it ebbs and flows; they have longstanding relationships with the children and have earned their trust. For this reason, all the images in this exhibition have been captured by Wrexham playworkers, rather than by a visiting artist or photographer.
