We caught up with Glenn Badham, who has one artwork in the Tŷ Pawb Open exhibition titled ‘Rockpooling (Combe Martin)’, and asked him a few questions…

• Where are you from?

I am from The Midlands, England.

• How long have you been a practicing artist for?

I have been a practicing artist for 25 years now (that makes me feel soooo old)!

• How has Lockdown effected the way you work?

I have been able to commit fully to my artwork, without distraction and I consider myself lucky having my work as a focus and distraction in these times. Emotionally I have been propped-up and buoyed by studio time and can see how hard it must be without something to galvanise and strengthen a persons resolve.

• Where do you find the most pleasure in your practice?

I derive most pleasure from colour and experimentation. Colour can take a lifetime to get to grips with and I love the battle to make a painting work (often they fail) and make colour stimulating but balanced. I also like experimenting with surface, new media, proportions and composition and pushing myself to try to gain a proficiency in my artwork.

• What impression do you want your work to make on audiences?

I would like my artwork to connect our phenomenal tradition of British painting with this moment in time. When contemporary art has almost deemed painting almost redundant I choose to keep with these traditions and celebrate the wonder of oil paint on canvas. In my view, still as radical as ever. I adore fractal geometry and the repetition in the world around us, so look to create beautiful landscapes, layered with texture and colour that talk to us all in a time when our ability to travel freely has been so inhibited.
