Introduction
This year, the theme of our Open is ‘creativity during lockdown’. The response to this theme has been inspiring, demonstrating the invention and resilience shown by artists from across Wrexham, Wales and the United Kingdom.
We received submissions from over 350 artists who were each able to provide three artworks for consideration. Three judges were then asked to select a range of works that not only fit the theme of the exhibition but also complemented each other and created a coherent display.
The judges making the selection were:
Lesley James – Winner of Wrexham Open 2018 Judges’ Prize
Katy McCall – Learning Manager at Manchester Art Gallery
Ffion Rhys – Curator, Aberystwyth Arts Centre
Together, the judges agreed on a selection of 117 artworks from 102 artists.

Creative Assignments
The Tŷ Pawb Open is displayed across both of our galleries. Also on display, in Gallery 2, we have outcomes from our Creative Assignments project. At the start of lockdown, Tŷ pawb commissioned seven artists to deliver a creative assignment that could be undertaken by our audiences whilst as part of our ongoing Arts At Home programme.
Jenny Cashmore, Peter Hooper, Sophie Lindsey, Ruth Stringer, Owain Train McGilvary, Rhi Moxon and Mai Thomas are the seven artists who were commissioned for the project. You can see the outcomes of their projects in Gallery 2.
