Heledd Wynn Newton

Heledd is 21 years old and is reading Music at Oxford University. She studies harp with Catrin Finch. Heledd has won many prizes including the Instrumentalist of the Future competition twice in the Llangollen International Eisteddfod, prizes in the Gwyl Gerdd Dant and in the Urdd and National Eisteddfodau. In 2024, she was the inaugural winner of the Pendine Young Musician of Wales Competition held in St Asaph as part of the North Wales International Music Festival.

Heledd has performed as a soloist numerous times in St David’s Hall and the Millennium Centre in Cardiff, her home town, and has appeared as a guest artist with many choirs including Cowbridge and Treorchy Male Voice Choirs. In 2025, she was invited to perform at 10 Downing Street as part of their St David’s Day celebration and she regularly performs at events for Red Bull and Williams Formula 1 teams. During her studies at Oxford, Heledd has given many recitals and performed at charity events, college balls, and concerts. She is also the official harpist for Oxford’s Dafydd ap Gwilym Society.

She is a member of several orchestras including the Oxford University Orchestra, Oxford Millennium Orchestra, and Oxford University Philharmonia, frequently performing as principal harpist at the Sheldonian Theatre. She was a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and is principal harpist with the National Youth Orchestra of Wales.

An avid composer, Heledd recently took part in a workshop with the BBC singers with her new composition for SATB choir. This composition, set to words from the Gododdin by the Medieval Brythonic poet Aneirin, won her the prestigious Chief Composer’s Medal at the Urdd Eisteddfod earlier this summer.

Heledd enjoys singing and is a member of Côr Heol y March, Côr Merched Plastaf and the National Youth Choir of Wales. She also plays the flute, piano and bass trombone.

When she’s not playing her harp, she enjoys learning languages, drinking coffee and looking after her six cats!
