Gypsy Makers
Rona Campbell invites you to celebrate the closing of Wrexham Peoples’ Treasures exhibition.
Over the last few months, our Maker Space resident artist, Rona Campbell, has been inviting people to bring in personal items and treasures from Wrexham’s history.
The response has been phenomenal!
The treasures have been viewed by over 150 international and local visitors. ITV Wales News not only filmed the personal treasures of the Portuguese group Bon Dia, but also those of Polish and local people.
Even the TV director Rob Shelly brought along his own treasure. It was a toy Nelly the Elephant!
Come along to view the treasures on last time before the end of Rona’s residency.
Rona said: “Many people had never had their art displayed in public before, and said it made them feel proud.
“I feel it was not their art that was being judged, their treasure choice was always fascinating and the story behind it interesting. My job was that of a sort of ‘human mental tin opener,’ encouraging people to open up about their treasure and why they had chosen it. I think meeting people and talking about their treasures was therapeutic for both of us.
“Please view the comments in the visitor’s book, one being, ‘this is what Wrexham needs!’ And generally, that the concept always led to a conversation with me, either about themselves or local history.
“Articles were published by the Wrexham Leader, and the project was promoted by Avow, Ty Pawb, and on social media. I visited local Libraries where participants continue to research their treasures.
“This was my Research & Development project supported by Arts Council Wales and Ty Pawb. Should this project continue? What do you all think? Do you have any ideas who could fund it?
Looking forward to seeing you all on Saturday.
